| Rangers overager situation slightly
clearer
On
October the 2nd, the Rangers acquired Spirit overage defender: George Halkidis
the acquisition leaves the Rangers in the position of having their first
team with no overage forward since the two overager format was introduced
to the OHL. Halkidis brings both size and offensive skills to the
Kitchener Rangers, standing at 6'1" 210lbs, and coming off season in which
he was third in scoring on the now defunct North Bay Centennials.
Since the move to Saginaw Halkidis had reportedly requested a trade, and
for a 5th round pick in the 2003 entry draft along with a 10th in the 2004
entry draft Halkidis got his wish. Halkidis scored 8 goals and contributed
29 assists for a total of 37 points last season with North Bay, barely
sneaking into the postseason on the strength of a come from behind 6-2
victory in a single game tie-breaker against the Kingston Frontenacs for
the final playoff spot. After delighting a full-house in North Bay
one last time the Centennials would bow out in 4 games to the conference
champion: Toronto Majors, Halkidis contributed 3 assists in his 5 postseason
games.
The move leaves the Kitchener Rangers team
in a very unsure position to be sure. With Halkidis and pending the
return of veteran defender Steve Eminger from the Washington Capitals,
the Rangers are put in a situation where they have 10 defensemen, including
two overagers, the other being: T.J. Eason. The Rangers are also
overstocked between the pipes with Scott Dickie (20), Matt Harpwood (19)
and rookie: Carlo DiRienzo (16). Perhaps the most important constraint
which the Rangers need to address is the overager situation where Peter
DeBoer must decide on only three of: netminder Scott Dickie, forward Mike
Amodeo, and defenders: T.J. Eason and George Halkidis. The most likely
scenario would have Mike Amodeo being the odd man out, and since he will
have a tryout with the UHL's Fort Wayne Komets, and with 19 games left
on his suspension from last season Mike may make the Rangers choice for
them.
Halkidis has not played this season which means
that he will probably be off to a slow-start but pick things up later in
October. |
