Perhaps it wasn't that big a surprise when
John Murray was named player of the week. He did post 3 wins in three
games, allowing a combined 4 goals, including one 43-stop shutout.
It's something that a Rangers' player hasn't done in the past while.
The last Rangers' player of the week was Evan McGrath who came bursting
out of the gate in the Rangers' first two games last season. That's
the last Ranger to receive the one-week honour. Dan Turple despite
all of his shutouts last season was never named player of the week, though
it's notable that he was goaltender of the month in consecutive months
of January and February. Murray may have held the Peterborough Petes
and Plymouth Whalers to a combined 1 goal in two games to start the season,
but the game where Murray unmistakably made his mark was the weekend's
third game against the Mississauga IceDogs where fatigue was a very evident
factor in the players infront of him that made some errors, and often times
he single handedly bailed them out. Murray, a 19-year-old OHL rookie
has worn two Rangers' jerseys this season, he played in the camp for the
New York Rangers, before being returned to the junior team that he had
just signed on.
Questions as to why Murray was such a sought after commodity by several OHL teams during the off-season were answered in London, and pretty much ever since Murray's breakout effort, one where the Rangers would eventually fall to the London Knights in what was easily the longest shootout in Kitchener Rangers' history. Murray was impressive during regulation times and even more impressive during the shootout where he faced and stopped snipers who have made a habit of making many of the best netmidners in the league look horrible during shootouts. Murray, who's posted 8 wins over the course of the season, he ranks second in the league now in goals against average in a race a top the league that includes 3 rookies in the top four of the league. Murray's .919 save percentage is also worthy of press. Judging by the way that the Murray has been playing all season, there's really no reason for Murray's improved play to stop, he's a great goalie with superb speed in the crease combined with a game that is extremely technically sound. Murray appears to be the Rangers' horse this season, if his play continues to improve, they coudl ride him deep into the post-season.
