How Acquired: Trade with Brampton

Brad Topping originally a second round pick of the Brampton Battalion was thrown into the fire early in his career.  With the Battalion playing very competitive hockey and things looking up, the team made a huge but risky trade with the Barrie Colts, they sent their number one goalie: David Chant, along with Tyler Hanchuk and former Rangers' forward: Matt Grennier for Brian Finley.  Finley was recouperating from a groin injury when he was acquired, but his showing during the Colts' 2000 OHL championship run made the Battalion confident that there would be an immediate payoff with the likes of: Harrison, Torres, Bateman, and Maleyko on the team to name a few of the stars on the team.  Knowing that they'd have no number one netminder the Battalion elected to make the deal handing the ball to the underaged Brad Topping who ran with it very effectively.  Once Finley returned he'd find his playing time restricted again, but he did manage to find some playoff time during the second round when Finley as well as the remainder of the team struggled against the Erie Otters in the second round falling in 5 games.

Topping's second season was a rebuilding one for the Battalion where he and fellow 17-year-old: Joey Biasucci struggled between the posts for a Battalion team who had been ravaged by graduation, and depleted with injuries throughout the season.  On one night at around the mid-season mark the Battalion were blasted 10-0 by the Rangers.  Still despite all of the odds being stacked against them the Battalion were competitive on most nights in an extremely competitive Western Conference.  Down the stretch the injuries and youth became too much for the team to counter, and they finished 10th, last in the conference, but still with a very respectable record.

During the 2002-'03 campaign, Topping was considered a veteran netminder.  Topping had perfected a textbook butterfly style, with lightning quick speed in covering rebounds at the top of his crease.   Aside from a career year, with a .912 save percentage, leading the Battalion to their first and only division title, Topping was brilliant during the first round of the postseason.  During the first round of the postseason: Barrie Colts ran into Topping who thwarted them despite the fact that they were outshot badly during the 6 game series.  During the second round against the Majors, who would eventually take the East Conference champion: Ottawa 67's to 7 games in the third round, Topping was struggled, neither of Topping nor: Coulture seemed to have the answer against the Majors.

Topping got off to a slow start in his 4th season with the Battalion, starting the year with mono.  Unfortunately as the trade deadline arrived, Topping was unable to find the game that made him so dominant the season before, he requested a trade for a new start.  The Rangers accomodated sending a struggling 19-year-old of their own: Tyson Kellerman to the Battalion.  Topping was initially received well in Kitchener, but his game slowly began to show some of the struggles that limited his playing time in Brampton.  Going down too early and control of rebounds seem to be of concern this season with the Rangers.
