Paul McFarland is one of the more talented role playing specialists in the OHL.  He is regularly used as a defensive specialist, a center who's role is to win defensive zone faceoffs, play against the opposition's top line, and some timely work on the penalty kill.  McFarland a late 10th round pick of the Kitchener, who was also born late in 1985, has proven to be a classic late bloomer.

During his rookie season McFarland split time between the the wing and playing pivot on the Rangers' 4th line on a team loaded with depth, despite struggling for playing time he managed to accumulate a total of 17 points during that rookie campaign, and though he was held pointless in the 12 of 21 postseason games that he participated, he was still a very strong utility assest for the Rangers.   Unfortunately because of the resurgent play of: Chad McCaffrey, a roster spot for McFarland was not available during any of the Rangers' 4 Memorial Cup games.

During his second OHL season and first with NHL draft eligability, Paul McFarland has taken up a more expended role.  Since the departure of Chad McCaffrey who also jeopradized McFarland's ice time as the center of the Rangers' third line Paul has really taken off.  During much of the season he has been assembled with rough and tumble wingers: Nathan O'Nabigon and Adam Keefe on his line.  The three are quite tenacious, all three forecheck well and creating havoc in the offensive zone.  None of the three shy away from fighting, hitting or good old fashion tough stuff in the offensive or defensive zones.

While on the penalty kill Paul has proven that he is not afraid to block point shots, he is seen up front in that facility with linemate Adam Keefe often.  At one point, in the early new year, his line was the most effective on the Rangers' team.  McFarland and crew seemed to be a true pick me up for the Rangers, the line's intensity, and the struggles that they create for the opposition while trying to clear their zone are often daunting.  After a fairly lackluster rookie season, McFarland has raised his stock enough to develop some attention from NHL scouts and his name has been seen on some preliminary scouting reports..
